Shakopee Tribe among biggest donors in Minnesota
Thursday, August 28, 2008

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota has donated nearly $60 million to fellow tribes, Indian organizations and non-profits in the past two years, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

The tribe's giving makes it one of the sources of philanthropy in the state. "They are one of the, if not the, most generous tribes in the nation," Ernie Stephens, the chairman of the National Indian Gaming Association, told the paper.

The tribe's money has funded a wide range of projects, from helping the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota with its fisheries program to $12 million to the University of Minnesota for scholarships and a tribal plaza at the school's new football stadium.

The tribe ranks in the top 20 donors in Minnesota.
