Highest court in Brazil weighs Indian rights case
Thursday, August 28, 2008

Brazil's Supreme Court heard arguments on Wednesday in a complaint against the size of a 4.2 million-acre reservation in the Amazon.

The Raposa Serra do Sol reservation is home to about 18,000 members of the Makuxi, Wapixana, Ingariko, Taurepang and Patamona tribes. Their land is increasingly targeted by farmers.

Two elected officials in the state of Roraima say the reservation is too large for the tribes. They want to be able to carve out parcels for rice farms.

A panel of 11 judges heard the case. One judge already voted against the elected officials but a full ruling was delayed so another judge could have more time to consider the complaint.
