Sentencing for ex-Oglala Sioux leader delayed
Thursday, August 28, 2008

Don Garnier, a former council member for the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, will wait until October 1 to be sentenced on drug charges.

Garnier, 39, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute less than 50 kilograms of marijuana. He faces up to five years in prison.

Garnier was a passenger in a car that was stopped in New Mexico in September 2007. Authorities found 21 pounds of marijuana in the trunk.

Garnier was forced to resign his seat on the council. The tribe started requiring drug tests for officials but they were eventually suspended.
