Update: Jack Abramoff received 48 months, to run concurrently with his bank fraud sentence. In total, he will serve slightly less than six years in prison, but could benefit from credits.
Jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff told a federal judge on Wednesday that he was “not a bad man” despite cheating his tribal clients out of millions of dollars.
In a
letter to
Judge Ellen
S. Huvelle, Abramoff admitted he "did many bad things." He has pleaded guilty to bank fraud and to a conspiracy to defraud tribal clients, bribe a member of Congress and evade federal taxes.
Abramoff is already serving time on the bank fraud charges. and could face up to 11 yeas on the remaning charges. But his attorneys and the
Department of Justice are seeking a much lower sentence, to run concurrently with his bank fraud sentence. They cite his cooperation with an ongoing corruption investigation that has netted more than a dozen guilty pleas.
The sentencing takes place at 2pm in Courtroom 24A of the
federal courthouse in
Washington, D.C.
