Colorado tribes recognized for anti-crime efforts

The
National Native American Law Enforcement Association recognized the
Southern Ute Tribe and the
Ute Mountain Ute Tribe for taking steps to reduce crime on their reservations in Colorado.
The tribes have been working closely with
U.S. Attorney Troy Eid to address high crime rates and jurisdictional issues. At one point, Eid had referred to the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation as the "murder capital" of the state.
"We've set expectations, and we've shown there can be progress," Eid told The Durango Herald of the progress made in improving cooperation at the tribal, state and federal level.
The award was presented at NNALEA's conference in Las Vegas last week.
