Interstate Indian Council hears from South Dakota AG

A state official who has fought tribes on land-into-trust, sovereignty and jurisdiction spoke to the
Governors Interstate
Indian Council on Tuesday.
The council is holding its
annual
conference in Rapid City, South Dakota, this week.
Attorney
general Larry Long spoke to attendees about tribal-state relations, including failed attempts to negotiate a new gaming compact.
Long recently co-authored a study that questioned whether non-Indians commit most of the violent crimes against Indians. He is part of a coalition of states that is urging the
U.S. Supreme Court
to limit land-into-trust acquisitions in
Carcieri
v. Kempthorne.
