Paiute Tribe invites law enforcement to play

The Paiute Tribe of Utah hopes a friendly game of basketball will improve relations with local law enforcement and improve its members' health.

The tribe is hosting an open gym three nights a week in Cedar City. "By having law enforcement present at open gym, it allows them to get to know our tribal members," Chairwoman Lora Tom told The St. George Spectrum.

Tom hopes the effort will help tribal members stay away from drugs and alcohol. Damon Polk, a substance abuse counselor for the tribe, said the games will ease tensions and feelings of mistrust between the tribe and law enforcement.
