County in Arizona elects its first Indian sheriff

There's a new sheriff in town in Apache County, Arizona, and for the first time in history, it's a member of the Navajo Nation.

Joe Dedman Jr. beat five other challengers for the Democratic nomination for Apache County Sheriff. Since the Republican party didn't put up a candidate, he was assured victory on Tuesday.

“We made history and I’m looking forward to taking office,” Dedman told The Gallup Independent. He said he will work with Navajo communities on issues like bootlegging and homeland security.
