Oglala Sioux Tribe seeks return of Episcopal land
The Oglala Sioux Tribe is seeking the return of land being used by the Episcopal Church of South Dakota.

The diocesan plans to close 11 churches on the Pine Ridge Reservation so the tribe wants the land back. A lawyer said the church agrees with the idea.

"It has always been our intention that if these properties aren't used as missions of the Episcopal Church, that they would be, in one way or another, turned over to the tribe or to some other group locally," attorney Steven Sanford told The Rapid City Journal.

The churches are being closed for low attendance and financial reasons. Tribal members have filed suit against the diocese in tribal court in hopes of keeping them open.
