Statistics Canada released two reports on Monday, one on employment levels among Aboriginal people and another on the prison population.

Aboriginal People Living Off-Reserve and the Labour Market: Estimates from the Labour Force Survey found that 70.1 percent of Aboriginal adults ages 25 to 54 were employed. The rate among non-Aboriginals was 82.5 percent.

Despite the disparity, the rate of employment among off-reserve Aboriginal adults rose 5.1 percentage points between 2004 and 2007, according to the report. The rate among non-Aboriginals rose 1.2 percentage points.

The second report, Changing profile of adults in custody, 2006/2007, found that two out of every 10 inmates is Aboriginal. The number of Aboriginal adults admitted into custody grew 23 percent, according to Statistics Canada.
