BIA delays decision on Little Shell recognition

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has delayed a decision on the federal recognition petition for the Little Shell Chippewa Tribe of Montana.

The BIA promised a final determination on January 28. But the Office of Federal Acknowledgment said an answer would come by July 29.

The landless tribe has sought recognition for more than 100 years. The Clinton administration issued a proposed finding in favor of the tribe but the Bush administration never finalized a decision.

Chairman John Sinclair said he hopes the latest delay proves that Congress should pass a bill to recognize the tribe.
