The Native American Rights Fund and the American Civil Liberties Union say the state of Alaska has failed to live up to a court order to provide assistance to Yup'ik speaking voters.
The state agreed to make changes to its election system after the lawsuit was filed last year. But a new motion in federal court said the state hasn't done enough.
"That is very disappointing because not only is the state not in compliance, but their lack of assistance affects so many Yup'ik people who just want to be able to understand what they are voting for," Jason Brandeis of the ACLU of Alaska told The Anchorage Daily News.
The state said it hired a full-time language coordinator who is fluent in Yup'ik, recruited bilingual poll workers and translators and broadcast Yup'ik announcements.
