Glenn Marshall, the former chairman of the recently recognized Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts, pleaded guilty on Wednesday.

Marshall admitted to violating campaign finance laws, embezzling funds, filing false tax returns and fraudulently receiving Social Security benefits. The actions stem from his use of money he received from the tribe's financial backer.

Marshall is due to be sentenced May 7. He has been cooperating with federal investigators in an ongoing investigation that could net other former tribal leaders.

Marshall led the tribe when it won federal recognition in May 2007. He resigned a few months later after he admitted he concealed his criminal record and lied about his past.
