Activists to commemorate Whiteclay deaths
Tribal activists plan a special commemoration to mark the unsolved deaths of two Oglala Sioux men in Whiteclay, Nebraska.

Wilson Black Elk Jr. and his cousin Ronald Hard Heart were found dead on June 8, 1999. Their deaths have gone unsolved despite pressure from activists who oppose the sale of liquor in Whiteclay, a town near the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

"Ten years is too much," said Frank LaMere, a member of the Winnebago Tribe, at a press conference at the Nebraska State Capitol, The Omaha World-Herald reported. "It's hard to talk about 'The Good Life' with Whiteclay flourishing in our backyard."

LaMere said the commemoration also will call attention to others who have died near Whiteclay.
