Firefighters employed by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut voted unanimously to organize into a union.
The vote was the first to take place completely under tribal law. The tribe said it looked forward to negotiating a bargaining agreement with the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association of Connecticut.
The tribe had been locked in a battle with employees of its casino who had voted to organize under federal labor law. The two sides reached an agreement for the union to follow tribal law, although federal law remains an option in that case.
