The Arizona Republic filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit to force the Bureau of Indian Affairs to release documents related to a serial rape case.
The newspaper asked the BIA for investigation reports, employment records and other documents related to a series of 15 sexual assaults on the Fort Apache Reservation. Even though the BIA is no longer following the case, the agency said it won't turn over the information due to privacy concerns.
The BIA arrested two former housing security officers for the White Mountain Apache Tribe in connection with the rapes but both were cleared. The men are now suing the BIA.
A third man was arrested and convicted but his case wasn't linked to any of the serial rape cases.
