Auburn Community considers buying Indian cemetery
The United Auburn Indian Community might buy an Indian cemetery in northern California, a spokesperson said.

Some of the tribe's ancestors are buried at the Colfax Indian Cemetery. "We're in discussions with the cemetery district to possibly assist in preserving the cemetery for Native Americans who may be buried there in the future," spokesperson Doug Elmets told The Sacramento Bee.

The cemetery's future is up in the air because the Colfax Cemetery District no longer wants to maintain it. The district padlocked the cemetery earlier this year because it lacked liability insurance.

The cemetery is open again but members of the non-recognized Colfax-Todds Valley Consolidated Tribe are concerned about state restrictions on burials.
