Off-reservation Chippewas seek recognition
Members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians who live near Trenton, North Dakota, are seeking federal recognition as a separate tribe.

Chippewas have a long history in Trenton. The Trenton Indian Service Area was established through the Turtle Mountain Band to provide services to members living there.

But TISA leaders say the distance between Trenton and the reservation leads to neglect for the community. They say they aren't receiving all the services they were promised because all the money must come through the Turtle Mountain Band.

Trenton is about 250 miles from the reservation.
