NCAI backs Sonia Sotomayor for Supreme Court
The National Congress of American Indians supports the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court.

NCAI passed a resolution at its mid-year session last month in support of Sotomayor. If confirmed, she would be the first Hispanic person to sit on the nation's highest court.

"Sotomayor's judicial decisions show a willingness to give serious consideration to the fundamental principles of federal Indian law and tribal self-government," said NCAI President Joe Garcia. "NCAI believes Judge Sotomayor deserves a seat on the Supreme Court."

The Native American Rights Fund is also supporting Sotomayor, citing her record as a judge on the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals. Though the court has heard some significant land claim and land-into-trust cases, she has only participated in three of them.

The National Native American Bar Association supports Sotomayor but didn't endorse her due to her lack of direct experience in Indian law.
