Incoming students at a public school in Virginia will vote on a mascot to go along with their "Tuscarora" name.

Principal Pamela Paul-Jacobs, who has Lumbee and Waccamaw ancestry, invited students to submit potential mascots for the Tuscarora High School. The "Huskies," the "Timber Wolves" and the "Tribe" were the top three.

But after consulting Teresa Morris, a Tuscarora descendant who founded of the Coastal Carolina Indian Center, Paul-Jacobs decided to get rid of the "Tribe" option. "If people show up at a game wearing war paint, if they make Indian chants, it has no meaning to them. But for Native American people, they do have meaning," Paul-Jacob told The Washington Post of a conversation with Morris.

Instead, the third choice will be "Tigers." The school opens in 2010.
