Fort Peck voters to weigh council, constitution
Voters of the Fort Peck Tribes of Montana will go the polls October 31 to elect new leaders and consider changes to their constitution.

Chairman A.T. Rusty Stafne is running for re-election. Former chairman John Morales Jr, who was ousted in 2004, Wayne C. Two Bulls and Floyd Gene Azure are also running for the post.

Vice Chairman Garrett Big Leggins is also seeking re-election. He will face Roxy Bighorn and Roxanne Gourneau.

Voters will get to choose a sergeant-at-arms and 12 council members as well. But proposed changes in the constitution could affect future elections.

One change creates staggered elections for the 12 council seats and extends their terms to four years. Another change allows for runoff elections.

The new constitution would create an independent judiciary and a tribal Bill of Rights. All of the proposed changes have to be approved in order for them to go into effect.
