The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in Buono v. Salazar, a religious freedom case, on October 7.

Frank Buono, a former superintendent for the National Park Service, sued the Interior Department for allowing a Christian cross in the Mojave National Preserve in California. The courts sided with him but Congress intervened and prevented the removal of the cross.

Despite Congressional action, Buono pressed his case. At issue is whether he has standing to sue the federal government for violating his religious beliefs and whether the Congressional solution to the dispute violates the U.S. Constitution.

Twice this year, the Supreme Court has declined to hear religious freedom cases filed by tribes and individual Indians.
