Washington tribes pledge for Native center

Tribes are donating money and materials for a longhouse-style Native center at the University of Washington.

The Yakama Nation agreed to provide wood for the UW House of Knowledge. The Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe plans to donate $25,000.

“Right now we feel that the tribes are likely to come through with some support for the project, so we’re not too anxious about that. We’ve been working closely with them all along,” David Iyall, an assistant vice president for advancement who is a member of the Cowlitz Tribe, told The Daily.

The center is expected to cost between $12 million and $15 million but Iyall said the figure is likely to change as plans solidify.
