Pala Band to purchase site of former ancestral village
The Pala Band of Mission Indians of California is buying a ranch that includes the village that the tribe's ancestors were forced to leave in 1903.

The tribe is spending $20 million to acquire the 2,522-acre Warner Springs Ranch. Plans call to continue operating the ranch as a business.

“It was like a dream for myself and the tribe,” Chairman Robert Smith told The North County Times. “Fifteen years ago, I never thought we’d be able to do it.”

The tribe occupied the area for thousands of years but the U.S. Supreme Court said the land belonged to a former state governor. The tribe was forced to march 39 miles to the present-day Pala Reservation.
