Cherokee Nation shares $2.8M with public school districts

The Cherokee Nation shared $2.8 million in car tag revenues with public school districts in Oklahoma.

The tribe, the largest in the state, started its car tag program in 2002. Every year, 38 percent of the revenues go to schools in the tribe's 14-county area.

"This contribution refutes the idea that Indians don’t pay taxes," Chief Chad Smith said in a press release. "It is unique in that we’ve taxed ourselves and are sharing that tax so that we can advance education in Oklahoma."

Since 2002, the tribe has contributed $19 million.
