Cobell discusses settlement on Fort Belknap Reservation

Elouise Cobell, the lead plaintiff in the Indian trust fund lawsuit, met with members of the Fort Belknap Indian Community of Montana on Tuesday.

Cobell, a member of the Blackfeet Nation of Montana, is trying to inform landowners about the $3.4 billion settlement in the case. She said the meetings in Indian Country are a way to dispel misinformation.

“The rumor mill started,” Cobell said, KFBB-TV reported. “Some people who are not so friendly to the Indian people were trying to cause damage with rumors. We wanted to get out and get people the right information.”

Cobell is meeting with members of the Fort Peck Tribes today before she heads to Washington and Oregon. Other members of the litigation team will be in Idaho next week.
