San Manuel Band announces $5.6M in community grants
The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians of California donated $5.6 million ton non-profits and charitable organizations at its second annual Forging Hope luncheon on Tuesday.

The largest donation of $3.7 million went to the University of Redlands. The money will be used to establish an endowed faculty position in Native American studies and to support other activities at the school.

In addition to the donations, the tribe presented the inaugural Yawa’ Awards. Yawa' is a concept in the Serrano language that means putting one's beliefs into action.

The awards were given to the American Red Cross Inland Empire Chapter, the American Indian College Fund, the Havasupai Tribe of Arizona, the Second Harvest Food Bank and the Home of Neighborly Service.
