BIA to develop new assessment for Navajo power plant
The Bureau of Indian Affairs plans to submit a new biological assessment for a controversial power plant on the Navajo Nation.

The BIA withdrew the assessment for the Desert Rock Energy Project last year. The Associated Press said there were concerns about the impact on endangered fish.

The assessment is separate from the air permit for the project. The Environmental Protection Agency has been ordered to reconsider the project but the tribe and its partner, Sithe Global Power, haven't submitted a new application.

The tribe says the coal-fired power plant will generate jobs and revenue on the reservation. Tribal members in the Shiprock, New Mexico, area oppose the project.
