United Keetoowah Band to enter self-governance pact
The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma has been selected to join the self-governance program at the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The tribe will enter into a self-governance compact to gain more control of federal funds. "The tribe has always had the ability to run its own business, and after five years of hard work, we have proved we can run our own tribal government as well as other federally recognized tribes," Chief George Wickliffe said in a press release.

The tribe hopes to manage Indian Child Welfare Act, social services, roads and other programs under a compact.
