After threats from the country's attorney general, an Indian community in Ecuador won't carry out the death penalty against a man who was convicted of murder.

Orlando Quishpe, 21, had been sentenced to death by residents of La Cocha, a Kichwa (Quechua) village. But after discussing the case, they decided to punish him with five years of hard labor.

Ecuador's constitution recognizes indigenous forms of justice. But the death penalty is outlawed in the nation.
