Mohegan Tribe to use federal loan to build government center

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut will use a $74 million federal loan package to build a community and government center.

The multi-level facility will include offices for the tribal council and the elders council, and it will house several tribal programs. There's also space for a gym and a fitness center.

The tribe started planning for the center in 1999. Plans were revived in 2006 but financing became difficult after the economy collapsed.

The project became reality again when tribe was able to secure loans through the Department of Agriculture. "It's not about a bailout," Chairwoman Lynn Malerba told The New London Day. "It's about a low-interest loan. We're going to pay every bit of it back - with interest."
