The Crow Tribe of Montana celebrated the launch of a new housing program that will utilize materials produced on the reservation.

The Good Earth Lodges program will put up 27 houses over the next couple of years. The homes will be built with compressed earth blocks that are manufactured at a plant owned by the tribe.

The plant produces about 1,900 blocks a day. Each home will require about 7,500 blocks.

The tribe has a h=waiting list for housing of at least 1,800 people. Existing levels of federal funding only provide for about five homes a year.
