Two former Navajo Nation officers charged for beating of man
Two former Navajo Nation police officers have been indicted in federal court in connection with the beating of a man on the reservation.

Former Officer Christine Thinn and former Sgt. Phillip Bedonie Jr. are charged with violating the civil rights of Newton Charlie. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Arizona said Thinn kicked and stomped on Charlie and used pepper spray on him while Bedonie stood by.

"Police officers have a sworn duty to uphold the Constitution when they wear a uniform," U.S. Attorney for Arizona David Burke said in a press release. "They are held to a higher standard that includes respecting the rights of those in their custody and protecting them from harm."

The incident took place in Tuba City, Arizona, on January 1, 2009.
