Editorial: It's time for public school to get rid of 'Indians' mascot
"How long will Mishicot be the home of the "Indians?"

The village of 1,450 people is named after Chief Abraham Mishicott. His descendants from the Potawatomie tribe continue to welcome village residents who make an annual bus pilgrimage to the tribe's land in Hannahville, Mich.

The high school mascot depicts a Native American chief in full headdress, which is emblazoned on the gymnasium wall and on the city's water tower.

City and school leaders, along with many village residents, have expressed a desire to maintain the name and mascot despite a realization that the number of Native American-based school identifiers has been rapidly dwindling in Wisconsin.

That trend has gained added momentum with recent passage of a law in Wisconsin allowing the superintendent of public instruction to pull the plug on race-based school nicknames or logos that are seen as degrading or stereotypical."
