Yurok Tribe launches project to reintroduce condors to California

The Yurok Tribe of California is leading a project to reintroduce condors to northern California.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to determine the best places for condor survival on and near the reservation. Fish and wildlife biologists and the Oregon Zoo are assisting the tribe with the project.

The condor plays an important role in Yurok history and culture. Condor reathers are used in ceremonial regalia and the condor sings a song that is part of the tribe's White Deerskin Dance, which begins next Friday.

"The lack of having condors here definitely inhibits us." Tiana Williams, a tribal wildlife technician, told The San Francisco Chronicle.

According to the paper, there are only 384 condors in the U.S. and Canada.
