Editorial: Long awaited justice over Indian trust fund settlement

"Could it be?

Could the case against the federal government for mishandling billions of dollars of Indian trust funds finally be coming to a close?

So it would seem — President Barack Obama has signed a historic $3.4 billion settlement of the lawsuit filed by Blackfeet Elouise Cobell and others.

But with this case, we can't help the feeling that we've been here before.

"Indian trust fund suit resolution nears," said the Tribune headline in 1999.

The accompanying wire service report said conclusion of the massive trust-fund lawsuit on behalf of half a million Indians was expected within the month. Needless to say, that didn't happen."
