Tom DeLay, former House majority leader, sentenced to 3 years

Former Republican House majority leader Tom DeLay was sentenced to three years in prison on conspiracy and money laundering charges in Texas.

DeLay, who plans to appeal, was found guilty of funneling $190,000 in corporate donations to Texas politicians. State law bars corporations from giving money to candidates.

DeLay was the target of a six-year Department of Justice investigation over his ties to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. DeLay took actions to benefit Abramoff's clients, including the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, but no charges were ever filed.
