First Nations leaders among 23 charged for prescription drug ring

Two leaders of the Key First Nation of Saskatchewan are among 23 people who have been charged in connection with a prescription drug trafficking ring.

Chief Clarence Papequash and Gerald Michael Papequash, a council member, face numerous charges for allegedly distributing hydromorphone, a narcotic. Authorities say the drugs were trafficked on four reserves in Saskatchewan, one reserve in Manitoba and other communities.

The investigation began last summer amid concerns about rising prescription drug abuse.
