Sayisi Dene First Nation seeks apology for 1956 forced relocation

The Sayisi Dene First Nation is asking the Canadian government to apologize for being forced to leave its homeland in northern Manitoba.

The First Nation was forced to move in 1956. Over one-third of the membership at the time died from disease and unnatural causes.

The First Nation was unable to hunt caribou, its traditional food source, and now suffers from a high rates of poverty, suicide and substance abuse. Members want to know when the government will address claims they submitted 14 years ago.

"They always say tomorrow,” elder Thomas Duck said in the Dene language, The Epoch Times reported. “When are they going to come and give us respect and answer our questions.”

The Department of Indian and Northern Affairs says it is still working on the report.
