Council at Lumbee Tribe fires administrator hired by chairman

The council for the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina voted unanimously to fire the tribe's administrator as part of a dispute with Chairman Purnell Swett.

Swett hired Rose Marie Lowry-Townsend about a year ago. The council reviewed her contract and said she was being paid more than allocated.

"No consultant or administrator can be employed in any capacity by the chairman without the approval or confirmation of the Lumbee Tribal Council," council member Pearlean Revels said, The Fayetteville Observer reported.

The Lumbee Supreme Court has affirmed the right of the council to review employment contracts. Swett has reportedly said the information is confidential.
