Saginaw Chippewa Tribe resolves zoning issues with city

The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe and the city of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, have reached an agreement over zoning issues.

Generally, the city's zoning laws will apply on the reservation. However, the tribe will set up its own enforcement office and will handle nuisance violations -- such as unmowed grass, trash, broken windows or unshoveled snow -- for its members, The Mt. Pleasant Morning Sun.

All other zoning issues, like rental housing and rezoning, will be handled by the city. But tribal members who want to appeal can go to tribal court, which will apply state and city laws in making decisions.

The agreement is part of a larger settlement that resolved the boundaries of the Isabella Reservation.
