Some Tuscarora Nation members shocked by $100M deal

Some members of the Tuscarora Nation of New York say they were surprised to learn about the size of a settlement with the state Power Authority.

Corrine Crogan and Ed Farnham sat on a committee that was supposed to determine what to do with the money. But they say tribal leaders never told them how much the tribe was getting -- it turned out to be $100 million, or $2 million a year.

"I was stunned," Farnham told The Niagara Falls Reporter . "We had been given different numbers, $21 million up front or $55 million over the life of the agreement, but nothing like this."

Neil Patterson, the tribe's representative, accepted the settlement in 2008. Tribal members say they don't know where the money is going but the paper said around $9.5 million has been invested in various banks and funds.
