Opinion: Re-elect Chad Smith as leader of Cherokee Nation

"District 3 Tribal Councilors, David Thornton Sr., Don Garvin and Janelle Lattimore Fullbright are asking for you to cast your vote for Chief Chad Smith and Chris Soap on June 25. Like you, we share a great pride in the legacy our Cherokee ancestors left us and that’s why we feel that the upcoming election is critical to the future of the Cherokee Nation.

Chad Smith took office in 1999 and has led the Cherokee Nation in the right direction with a stable, progressive, transparent and hard working government.

He has:

• Expanded our health care system — providing 3.4 million patient visits, built or expanded clinics in Muskogee, Nowata, Vinita, Bartlesville, Salina, Jay and Sallisaw and assumed management of Hastings Hospital;

• Created a stable and professional government with nine consecutive awards for excellence in financial accounting and clean audits;

• Helped three times the number of families each year buy or build their homes that the previous administration."
