Former Spokane Tribe jail deputy charged with sexual abuse

Clifford Arlen Matherly, a former jail deputy for the Spokane Tribe of Washington, pleaded not guilty to a sexual abuse charge.

Federal prosecutors say Matherly, 35, assaulted a woman who was being held at the Bureau of Indian Affairs jail on the reservation in May 2008. He left his job there a couple of years ago, The Spokesman Review reported.

Matherly was a defendant in a wrongful death lawsuit that was settled for $253,500, the paper said. A female inmate died in his care.
