Supreme Court to review petitions in Osage and Rincon cases

The U.S. Supreme Court
is considering petitions in two Indian law cases.
The justices are weighing Brown
v. Rincon Band of Luiseno Mission Indians, a gaming case. The Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians
and Department of Justice is say the high court should not review a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals
decision that held California in bad faith for compact negotiations.
The justices are also considering Osage
Nation v. Irby, a reservation diminishment case. The Osage Nation of Oklahoma wants
the court to overturn a 10th
Circuit Court of Appeals that said the reservation was diminished by an act
of Congress but DOJ is recommending against it
The justices will announce whether or not they will hear each case next week.
