Chief of Catawba Nation drops re-election bid and endorses rival

Donald Rodgers, the chief of the Catawba Nation of South Carolina, has dropped his bid for re-election.

Rodgers has served one four-year term. He filed for re-election but withdrew after deciding to accept employment elsewhere, according to a letter posted on the tribe's web site.

"I have been presented an opportunity that I can not let go," Rodgers said in the letter.

Rodgers asked his supporters to vote for Bill Harris in the July 23 election. Jason Harris is also running for chief.
