Cherokee Nation plans to build $140M hydroelectric power plant

The
Cherokee Nation plans to build a $140 million hydroelectric power plant at the
W.D. Mayo Lock and Dam in Oklahoma if a bill in the 112th Congress becomes law.
Federal law already authorizes the tribe to build the facility. But the tribe is seeking changes in order to outright own the plant and to market the electricity on its own.
The
House Natural
Resources Committee approved
H.R.1421 by unanimous consent on Wednesday.
The bill will go the
House floor for a vote.
A version of the bill hasn't been introduced in the
Senate.
