Union seeks to represent Navajo Nation government workers

Governmental employees of the Navajo Nation are being asked to join a union.

The tribe certified the United Mineworkers of America to act as a bargaining agent for the employees. Ballots were sent out with paystubs this week, The Navajo Times reported.

A majority of employees must agree to join the union. But before they do that, they will vote on whether to make membership mandatory or voluntary.

The employees of tribal enterprises are not covered by the vote.
