Chief resigns from Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations

Guy Lonechild resigned as chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.

Lonechild came under scrutiny when he was charged with drunken driving. The incident occurred one month prior to his election as chief of FSIN in October 2009.

Some First Nations leaders started a campaign to oust Lonechild and the FSIN board suspended him last month. But he won a court order that reinstated him.

Rather than continue as chief, however, Lonechild accepted a buyout offer. Terms weren't disclosed.

"It took me by surprise that there was an offer on the table and we felt it was best to part ways," Lonechild said at a brief news conference, CKOM reported. "If we parted ways mutually, both the FSIN and myself as a person, we would be able to move in a new direction."
