United Auburn Indian Community offers to take over cemetery

The United Auburn Indian Community has offered to take over an Indian cemetery in northern California.

The tribe wants to acquire the Colfax Indian Cemetery. The offer includes money for "upkeep, utility costs, liability insurance, and various operational needs for the property," according to a letter from administrator Gregory S. Baker.

The cemetery has been in limbo because the Colfax Cemetery District no longer wants to maintain it. The district padlocked the cemetery in 2009 due to a lack of liability insurance.

Miwok, Maidu and other tribal ancestors are buried at the cemetery.
